SAN DIEGO — March 1, 2022 — Sweetwater Union High School District and NFINIT, a San Diego-based provider of hybrid cloud solutions, connectivity, and colocation, are expanding their successful computer science internship program, which launched in the summer of 2021. With applications set to open in April, the second iteration of the program will welcome five new interns. The six-month internship offers underserved students the opportunity to gain highly employable skills around cybersecurity, cloud, network engineering, data science and more — all from a local San Diego data center.
In 2021, the program provided two local high school students, Arvie Cabal and John Paul Minimo, the opportunity to develop high-demand industry skills through hands-on experience working directly with the NFINIT team. John Paul Minimo is now a part-time employee with NFINIT as he completes college courses.
“It’s difficult to overstate what this program has meant to Sweetwater students,” explains Art Lopez, Sweetwater’s District TOSA (Teacher on Special Assignment) for Computer Science. “Both previous interns were exposed to experiences and knowledge — right in their backyard — that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to access. We’re excited to offer those same opportunities to our community in 2022 and beyond.”
Sweetwater and NFINIT developed the program as a way to combat the lack of diversity and representation in the computing and tech fields, which are struggling to attract enough talent to keep pace with job demand. Over the course of 11 years, Lopez has worked with other educators and community members to increase the number of resources and computer science courses offered to the students of Sweetwater High School District. The partnership between NFINIT and Sweetwater High School District is the first of its kind for the district.
“Watching the impact that an opportunity like this program had on the first round of interns was inspiring to the entire NFINIT team,” says Phil Kenney, CEO of NFINIT. “Many students are left without the proper resources to explore careers in our industry, resulting in a major diversity gap when it comes to the employee pool. NFINIT has the ability to provide some of those resources to our own community, and we’re proud to not only offer this opportunity for a second year but to double the size of the program.”
The application process is scheduled to kick off in April, with the program starting in June.
